August 2009 Movie Recommendations

Veerana (1988)

Here is my top ten movies I have seen in August. I also put some information with them about there releases.

I have seen a lot of movies in August so it was quite hard to pick just ten, because I have seen a lot of great ones. I tried to put them in order but for example Contamination could as well be number five and Mausoleum six. But all ten are great!

10. Nightmare (1981). Early eighties slasher flick with some psychological twists and some killer special effects. All though the credits say they are done by Tom Savini, they are not but believe me they are great. (VHS, but Code Red is working on it)

9. Sexo Cannibal aka Devil Hunter (1980) Really fun take on the Cannibal genre by Jesus Franco. Release: Severin Films, again a great release from Severin. Video and Audio are both great and there is a nice interview with Jesus (Jess) Franco on there.

8. Mondo Cane (1962) The first of the Jacopetti Mondo films. Great look into many aspects of life, death sex but also fun things. Don’t expect a shocking film, but back in 1962 it might have been shocking. But still a superb Mondo film. Release: There are more then one release of this movie. I have the Blue Underground DVD witch I recommend.

7. Phase IV (1974) Great killer ant movie, with some amazing shots of ants. Really clever movie that keeps exiting until the credits are popping up. Release: Legend Films. The quality of the DVD is good but it doesn’t have any special features.

6. Contamination (1980) Luigi Cozzi’s Alien film. The film has everything you want from an Alien film. Gore, exploding bodies, alien eggs and a great ending! The Soundtrack is done by Goblin, witch makes the movie even better. Release: I would go for the Blue Underground release. It contains an interview with Luigi Cozzi, a behind the scenes documentary, a theatrical trailer, poster & still gallery and a DVD-Rom graphic novel.

5. Mausoleum (1983) Great Grindhouse flick about a demon possession witch leads to some suspenseful action and some great gore scenes and make-up effects. Release: BCI/Eclipse. It’s on a Exploitation Cinema Double Feature with the movie Blood Song (1982). It’s especially fun when you watch it all at once and you really get the Grindhouse feeling. It does contain a Audio Commentary with Bobbie Bresee.

4. Malabimba The Malicious Whore (1979) Sleaze in its purest form. It’s about a girl named Bimba who gets possessed by a passed away relative that is obsessed with sex. So a lot of softcore porn, possession and a good soundtrack. Release: Severin Films first released the XXX black cased DVD in 2007 but after a year it got withdrawn from the market. In February of 2009 Severin came with a new red cased DVD witch didn’t contain the insert hardcore porn. The Disc also contains some nice special features.

3. Troll 2 (1990) Claudio Fragasso made one of the best of the bad back in 1990, Troll 2. The movie is so damn entertaining and makes me laugh so many times you can’t hardly believe it! I really want a potato sack Goblin costume! Release: Released on a MGM Double Feature DVD with Troll 1. Nothing special but at least you have the movie.

2. Veerana (1988) Bollywood horror at it’s best. You have everything that you can wish for. Indonesian music, great make up, some goofy scenes and I really loved the gothic land houses and foggy cemetery’s. Release: It’s on the Bollywood Horror Collection Volume 2 together with Purani Haveli witch is another Ramsay brothers film. The video & audio quality are superb.

1. The Warrior (1981) Also known as Jaka Sembung. The Warrior is played by 80’s action star Barry Prima. This movie combines magic, horror, fantasy and Martial Arts into one entertaining movie. There are a lot of memorable scenes in this movie especially in the fighting scenes Ki Item! So if Martial Arts, gore, Magic, fantasy and horror are your thing. Go get the DVD from Mondo Macabro. Release: Mondo Macabro released it on DVD, it also contains some cool special features like interviews and Background information.

Girls In Chains - Women In Prison Flicks

W.I.P. Flicks (Women In Prison) is a subgenre of the exploitation films. And actually the names says it all it’s about women in a prison. But this genre is not just women in a prison, actually it’s far more.

This subgenre was already to be seen in the Drive Ins back in to 1950’s but actually became popular and fun in the 1970’s. First let me explain some things and some clichés in the genre. First you have all the innocent girls that are locked up in a prison. Second of all you have the female prison guard who is very, very sadistic and most likely a lesbian. Another (really fun) thing is that the girls probably have to take a shower together, naked off course. Another thing that makes these movies entertaining is torture. Yes, good old torture. A major escape, most likely the girls are naked and even more likely it fails. Which returns us some torture scenes. And the lesbian cellmates that can’t stay clear from the main character.

Yes, these movies are sleazy, really sleazy witch makes this one of my all time favourite genres.

Some examples are Sadomania, Black Mama, White Mama, Bamboo House Of Dolls, Reform School Girls, Hellhole, Women In Cellblock 9, Caged Heat, Bare Behind Bars, Amazon Jail, Red Heat, Female Prisoner #701 etc.

Why are these movies so good you might be wondering. Well, just because they are a lot of fun. Imagine yourself sitting in front of your tele watching some lame news reporter talking about the same boring shit you here everyday. Well that betters your mood when you have had a hard day of work at the office. But then you see a glittering dvd of Reform School Girls, and decide to put it in your dvd player…….Wow! They are taking a shower together, tough women making life in prison even harder. Who is that blond chick in costume, oh she is the mean warden of the prison and she tortures these poor women. And better she is a lesbian! Explosions, adrenaline, naked women, torture.. This is the night of my life.

Now you see why this genre is so great. It’s sleazy and entertaining as can be!

Without a doubt your convinced. Let’s talk about some off the dvd labels that release these movies. First up, Blue Underground. Blue Underground is the label from former director William Lustig. They have released some of the very best in W.I.P. cinema. For example: Sadomania, Amazon Jail, Women Behind Bars and many more of the very best. Shriek Show has released Women In Fury. In the Roger Corman Early Films collection you can find Caged Heat witch is sadly in 4:3. Also check out Retro Shock-O-Rama witch released Women’s Prison Massacre and a Women In Prison Triple Feature witch contains: Women In Cell Block 7, Escape From Hell and The Hot Box!

Just check out all the genre labels and you will find a lot of the movies in this subgenre.

Thanks for reading, and now go watch some girls behind bars being naked and being tortured by a Lesbian Warden!

Mondo Macabro - The very best in genre film releases

I just finished watching Veerana on the Bollywood Horror Collection Volume 2. Released by Mondo Macabro. I was amazed not just by the film but also by the quality of this Indian horror movie. The sound and the picture quality were both outstanding, really I couldn’t believe how good this film looked.

Yes, Mondo Macabro always seems to get everything out of a film and make it look like it’s shot just a year ago.

Apart from the fact that they always release the best there is in quality. They also have one of the more interesting library of films. From the screaming Special Edition of Alucarda to the best of 70’s Turkish films with The Deathless Devil (Yilmayan Seytan) on a double bill with Tarkan Vs The Vikings. The are also the best in Bollywood horror.

I just can’t say enough about this great label that keeps releasing great films for people to enjoy!

Go check Mondo Macabro out on http://www.mondomacabrodvd.com/ and they are also on blogspot http://mondomacabrodvd.blogspot.com/?zx=ded9f021d1be93d9

Samurai Cop (1989)

Samurai Cop (1989)

Ahh, the good old eighties. The period where you could make a movie for $900,- and eventually get it released. Actually between 1984 and around 1990 it was the golden age for low budget films. Everything could get a proper release in theatres or on video.

But if you think you have seen everything comes Amir Shervan’s 1989 film Samurai Cop. Starring the famous Robert ‘The Face’ Z’Dar. Who off course played the Maniac Cop in William Lustig’s 1988 film Maniac Cop. But actually that’s the only link with Maniac Cop that can be made. The film has nothing to do with Lustig’s film. Robert Z’Dar doesn’t even play the Samurai Cop, he plays Fujiyama’s (The Boss) henchman. The Actual Samurai Cop gets played by Matt Hannon in his only film roll. Sad that they didn’t track this guy down because I would love to see an interview with him and maybe him starring in some new films.

So, the samurai cop is played by Matt Hannon who looks more like a long haired beach boy then a samurai. And next to the samurai cop you’ve got his partner in crime Frank with his famous laughs, Ha-ha-ha.

The film is about a Japanese organisation that deals in cocaine. Under the lead of Fujiyama. Who gets less screening time then his henchman Yamashita played by Robert Z’Dar. So the samurai cop and Frank have to stop this organisation.

Also one roll that stood out to me was played by Krista Lane who only is there to say ‘The Boss Is Coming’ and be in the only sex scene together with Z’Dar. But coming back to Krista, she is actually the same girl that plays in such classics as: Dial A Dick, Ramb-Ohh!, Deep Throat II and Captain Hooker & Peter Porn. Yes, she was a famous porn actress and now she is playing in this movie.

Another famous B-Movie actor is the police captain played by Jimmy Williams who played In such classics as Island Of Blood and Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers. The most famous actor in the cast is probably Gerald Okamura witch you might know from Big Trouble In Little China as Wing Kong Hatchet Man.

So Samurai Cop and Frank go after the bad guys and take them out one by one. In the mean while the samurai cop does it with 5 women trout the movie. But more then some French kissing is not there. (Apart from Melissa Moore!)

Frank makes some jokes that you should see to believe. He makes the joke about that he can’t burn his ass because it’s already black twice! And the most funny is when he crouches under a fence and the samurai cop asks him why he crouched underneath the fence and then the famous response ‘Well, I am an undercover cop’. Omg, that has to be the worst joke ever put in film.

Another famous scene witch you can see on youtube is the scene with the horny nurse, go watch it!

At the final fight scene at the house of Z’Dar, he and the Samurai Cop come into a final fight scene wich is really, really great.

I think that’s enough for now. So If you want to see a movie with all of this in it go get the dvd.

DVD Release: Samurai Cop is released by the Guilty Pleasures label. Apart from the movie it also contains an intro by Joe Bob Briggs, a Joe Bob Briggs Comedy Commentary (Hilarious) and an interview with Robert ‘The Face’ Z’Dar. And some trailers and a Production Photo gallery. Go get it, it’s well worth your money!

Glen Or Glenda (1953)

Glen Or Glenda (1953)

Edward D. Wood Jr. is claimed to be the worst director of all time. He independently produced his own movies, he wrote, directed such masterpieces as Bride Of The Monster and Plan 9 From Outer Space. He was eccentric and is still famous to this day.

The first Ed Wood movie I wanted to review was the 1953 weird film Glen Or Glenda, Wood’s take on transvestites. This movie is produced by George Weiss and with the original intensions to make a biopic about Christine Jorgensen, the fist man ever having a sex change. But like we are used to with Ed Wood he completely changed the complete idea, making it a semi auto biography about a guy named Glen, played by Ed Wood and his desire to dress in women’s clothing.

This movie also stars Bela ‘Dracula’ Legosi in one of the strangest roles ever played. Bela Lugosi is sitting in a chair trout the whole film. He plays a godlike character who is looking down on the world and on Glenda. But he is known as The Scientist, wich actually makes it even stranger. What purpose he has, I don’t know. A thing that makes this movie even weirder is the narration he gives. He says things like, Beware! Beware of the big green dragon that sits on your doorstep. He eats little boys... Puppy dog tails, and BIG FAT SNAILS... Beware... Take care... Beware!

What he means with all of these thing, I don’t have the slightest idea. Also another weird scene is when he is saying ‘Pull The String’ while seeing stock footage with bison ? But the strangest part of the entire film is the dream sequence. 15 minutes of things that have nothing to do with each other and just random strike the screen. You see a girl getting whipped on a couch and reactions of Glen, Bela Lugosi and a weird devil looking guy. Apart from that you have people acting like a couple of idiots and to top it all of some very strange striptease dances.

What genre would you classify this, I really don’t know. It has so many aspects of so many different genre’s. Glen Or Glenda is one of the hardest movies to review. Because I really didn’t have a clue about what was going on.

In short, trout the film you see the life of Glen and his Wife and Glen's wondling with women's clothing.

But I am a fan of weird films, and this was so weird! I loved it. I give it and 8 out of 10! Go watch it, you’ll love it.

- Be sure to come back and see more reviews and genretalk.
